The scenery and local culture in the Basque Country makes a surf trip here special. The Spanish people are among the friendliest people in the world and the easy access from the airports in Bilbao make Spain a popular and easy surf destination. Mundaka has put Spain on the world surfing map but there is much more to it than it.
The Surf
Spain has surf along most of its North Coast and is a great surf destination for all levels in surfers. There are waves for all standards of surfers from thumping tubes at the world class Mundaka to a variety of beachies and softer point breaks. Spain has many coves and inlets which offer protection in big winter swells. Not only does this offer smaller options on big days but plenty of options on different wind directions. There is crowds in the main surfing destinations but it is easy enough to get of the beaten track.
The Climate
Spain’s has surf all year round however the Autumn is best for experienced surfers but is more crowded at the famous spots. Winter can be surprising good and uncrowded and not as cold as northern Europe. The water isn’t as warm as France and while pleasant is summer you still need a wet suit.
